Signs of Unstable Snow

Observations

I did not dig a pit but there was 10-12 inches of heavy new snow on top of ~20 inches of lighter colder snow including 6-8 inches of depth hoar. There was widespread cracking and whumpfing including some cracks that carried across the slope up to 50 yards away, I stayed off steeper slopes but turning was impossible and 125mm underfoot skis were not nearly wide enough.
