Went up on the west face of Kendall today via Kendall Trees, with the hope of skiing the Silver Twins. As we broke into the clearing around 4800', it was clear the alpine had been blasted by the wind last night. We were getting small, isolated shooting cracks on open slopes. We bailed on our Silver Twins plan.
We also dug a pit at 4900', on a west-facing aspect. We recorded HS 125cm. I found the 11/22 crust pointed out in the forecast, with weaker snow sitting below it. A quick column test didn't show any results, though - also confirming the forecaster's observations.
The biggest hazard we encountered today was tree wells. A good reminder to keep your partners in sight on those dense tree-runs.
