Triggered Avalanches

Did you trigger any avalanches?
Yes
Was it intentional?
Yes
Avalanche Type:
Wet Slab
Size:
Size 1: Relatively harmless to people
Elevation:
4500’
Aspect:
SW
Comments:
I spotted a small fresh crown of around 1-1.5’ and around 10’ wide on a convexity in the trees. I decided to test a similar convex rollover that was around 40 degrees at the same location. I was able to trigger a small slab with a crown of about a foot and the length of my ski with a couple of small hops.

Signs of Unstable Snow

None reported

Observations

The snow conditions were extremely variable with lighter snow at the bottom of the valley, then wetter, heavier snow mid-mountain, and dryer again towards the top. I stayed away from larger open slopes. Test slopes skied higher up did not yield any wet slab results like I saw lower down on the mountain.
