Eliot Glacier Headwall NE 9200ft |
D3 | HS-Hard Slab | N-Natural | Report |
No new avalanches. Observed a handful of large to very large natural avalanches around the Eliot Glacier and in Polallie Canyon that occurred during the avalanche cycle January 6-7.
Hard overnight freeze with a supportable crust and frozen rain rills at the snow surface up to 6000ft. Above, 1-2in of new snow atop icy, wind-affected surfaces. The snowpack was strong and consolidated with no signs of instability observed today. Below 7000ft, E and S aspects began to soften around 11am. Skiing conditions were variable with a few chalky turns up high, some corn-like skiing on the sunniest slopes, and a firm, loud, and bumpy ride in most other places.
