Tumwater Canyon was closed from late on January 5th to January 13th. Two major cycles occurred- First a widespread loose dry and soft slab avalanche cycle to D2-2.5 with lots of lower density dry snow from the 5-8th. A second cycle occurred on January 11-13th with rain to higher elevations, and some D3 slides observed across the river from the highway. WSDOT reported 208 debris piles onto the road after the initial event with 10 very large slides that crossed the road and ran into the river. Another round of road-hitting slides occurred with the rain, causing intermittent closures after the road was reopened.
Loose dry, soft slab, and wet loose avalanches. Amount of avalanches is approximated.
