Signs of Unstable Snow

Observations

22F at the car in the morning. Cloudy all day with winds picking up around noon. Cold all day.

Toured up the NE aspect of Humpback, skiied the same aspect.

Observed no signs of natural or skiier trigged avalanches.

Did feel some pockets of soft slab formation, (guessing windslab) as there was evidence of drifting and visual signs of snow transport all the way up. Breaking the top 6" with a ski would sometimes result in very isolated cracking.

Mitt pit demonstrated the snowpack getting progressively denser in the top 70cm or so.

This didn't result in any instability on the descent. Almost no sluffing or movement at all. Skiing was excellent.

Watch out for the alder above the roadcut, lots of holes.

Also, snow and wind accumulation picked up around noon. In about 3 hours, there was 2" of new snow on our skintrack on the open road.
