Signs of Unstable Snow

Observations

Fine day of spring powder skiing, hiding from the sun until the warming turned us for home. Upper shady elevations skied well until at least noon, shady slopes at mid/lower elevations were beginning to throw snowballs, rather than fluff, at and after 2pm. Sunny slopes were pinwheeling and generating small loose-wet slides at and after 11am.

Upper snowpack was mostly unreactive to our skiing, running loose-dry on some steep shady slopes at the times we skied them. The crust below the most recent snow was somewhat loud but edgeable. Wind effect at ridgelines was present, but not nearly as windhammered as we sometimes see.

No meaningful slab activity observed (note tiny windslab release in Roaring Ridge image).
