Observed Avalanches

Did you observe any avalanches?
Yes
Avalanche Type:
Hard Slab
Size:
Size 3: Could bury and destroy a car, damage a truck, destroy a wood frame house, or break a few trees
Elevation:
6800'
Aspect:
NE
Comments:
It appears that the Cannon Mountain couloir ran mid-storm (likely 22 February storm). Crown from a persistent/deep slab on looker's left side of col HS-N-R3-D3. There was a crown in the same col last week (19-20 Feb) that had originated on the looker's right spur from a wind-loaded, corniced lip mid-col. Both slides may have broken on mid-February surface hoar or wind-loaded interface in looker's right example; may have also broken into January on looker's left slide. Crown appeared large (2-3 m), but was spotted cross valley and was spun in by snow and wind later in the storm cycle.

Signs of Unstable Snow

None reported

Observations

Still managing terrain for preservation of life and limb.

Media

Crowns in Cannon Mountain Col from across valley

Advanced Observations

Observed Avalanche Problem #1:
Deep Persistent Slab
Comments:
Aforementioned slide. Unsurvivable large hard slab avalanches still breaking on legacy weak snow from mid-February (possibly mid-January).
