Signs of Unstable Snow

Observations

The only note worthy observation for future avalanche problems was the presence of surface hoar and NSF's in specific terrain. They were mainly present on north facing terrain that was not exposed to the wind. Not found on west or south facing terrain with any incline. Also noted on some east aspects that were sheltered from the wind. With the cold calm snow coming in it will be interesting to see if these will be buried intact and actually cause a future avalanche problem.

Snow conditions were quite variable. Found good snow on sheltered east facing terrain. A couple inches, 2-5, of low density snow over the crust. There was ok snow in some north facing terrain but the winds of the last week had left much of the north face terrain with exposed icy rain runnels. Ski crampons required. Overall I can't wait for a good ol NW refresh.
