Today we (students) went out with the Mountaineers association to have our first AIARE 1 course field day. Clear skies and Sunny. No avalanches observed. The parking lot was a solid sheet of ice through the first half of the day. We did a column test about .5 miles from the trail head leading up (slightly west) to Austin Pass. The column test revealed a persistent faceted layer at 28 cm from the top causing the isolated slab to break off. Snowpack measurement was recorded at 305 cm. Had a wonderful day!
