Signs of Unstable Snow

Observations

Stubborn and firm wind slabs formed earlier this week on many aspects on the south side of Mt. Hood. Some softer surface snow near 6,000’, but relatively consistent surface conditions from 7,000’ to 10,000’. Light to moderate wind with no observable wind transport of snow on the ground.
The recent sun crust on solar aspects was nearly an inch thick at 6,000’ and progressively thinner above that, with no perceptible crust above ~8,000’. This crust was softened early, providing decent ski conditions on sunny aspects by 8:00 AM.
Plenty of skiers and climbers taking advantage of a nice morning on the mountain!
