Signs of Unstable Snow

Observations

Snowshoed Mt Townsend by standard route and observed some old avalanche debris on S aspects where snow had drifted. Hand test on nearby slope yielded 3" soft snow above a 4F crust which was not active. Crust became hard ice at places on ridge where snow was scoured away by wind. Wind from WNW in PM on ridge with light flurries, no significant blowing snow. Overall pleasant despite some instances of difficult travel on icy crust.
