Comments:
Ski cut in open area of Newton Canyon resulted in a small avalanche (crown approximately 6 inches deep, 10 ft wide, 20 ft long)
Did you see shooting cracks?
Yes, Isolated
Did you experience collapsing or whumpfing?
No
The small soft slab avalanche and shooting cracks were observed in the open portion of the bowl of Newton Canyon. A small cornice cut produced no results but a hand pit failed on isolation. Lower down in the trees, the snow was more stable (we dug several hand pits) although there was some sloughing on steeper terrain. I expect the avalanche hazard will increase significantly, especially if the expected snow is wet and heavy.
