Signs of Unstable Snow

Observations

Skied up into Bullion Basin under mostly cloudy conditions with light to heavy snow showers and temperature in the low 20s. A much needed 6 up to 14 inches of very recent low density snow covered the old slushy base of unknown depth. On the ascent towards the east ridge of the basin, occasional hand pits showed good bonding between the base of the new light snow and the older mushy pack below. West winds were light below the ridgeline so no noticeable slab formation as of yet. We skied a few excellent runs on west and southwest exposures and with no signs of "whumpfing," settlement, or new snow densification. The snowpack was still pretty thin the final third of the decent back to the base and caution about sparsely buried stumps and rocks was warranted.
